Year 4 Writing: The Great Outdoors

posted in: Year 4 News 0

Year 4 have been working incredibly hard on the current topic theme of The Great Outdoors.

In Literacy, the children have written poetry in the style of “The Lost Words”, written by Robert McFarlane and illustrated beautifully by Jackie Morris.

This book contains many words of the natural world, including  dandelion, otter, bramble, adder, heron, wren and acorn, many are gone from common usage and some dictionaries. The rich landscape of wild imagination and play is rapidly fading from our children’s minds. The Lost Words poetry stands against the disappearance of wild childhood and the writing reminds us of what is truly wonderful about the natural world around us.

In Year 4 we shared the poetry of The Lost Words and then wrote our own poems to describe and memorialise other words from the natural world of Britain.
