The Role of the School Governors/Academy Committee:
The role of the School Governor (also known as Academy Committee Member) is demanding but very rewarding and is a good way to give back to your local community.
School governing bodies are responsible for working with the school to ensure that it delivers a good quality education.
Together with the Principal, who is responsible for day-to-day management, they set the school’s aims and policies.
The Academy Committee at St Thomas More feeds into the main Board of Directors of the Pope Francis Multi Academy Company which we are part of.
Academy Committee members have three main roles:
- To provide strategic direction for the school
- To act as critical friend to the Principal
- To ensure accountability
They also carry out a number of other important duties, which include:
- Determining how the school’s budget is spent
- The appointing and dismissing of staff
- Hearing appeals and grievances
- Forming policy on the school’s curriculum and collective worship
- Setting standards for pupils’ behaviour and discipline
- Making sure the school buildings are welcoming and safe
- Setting and monitoring the school’s aims and policies
The Academy Committee plays a vital role in supporting the Principal and professional staff to determine the school’s ethos and aiding development so that its pupils learn most effectively and achieve their full potential.
It offers leadership, support, constructive advice, a second opinion on proposals and help where needed. It also challenges, asks questions, seeks information, and tries to arrive at the best solution.
The Principal and professional staff are accountable to the Governing Body for the school’s management and performance.
As a voluntary aided (VA) Catholic school, the majority of our governors are Foundation Governors, who are appointed by the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham. Many of our governors are also parents of children in the school.
The full governing body meets five times each year and business is delegated to two sub-committees, which meet usually once a term.
They are the Curriculum, Catholicity, Standards Sub-Committee; Finance, Recruitment and Resources Sub-Committee.
